"Jesus called them over and said to them, "You know that those
who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them,
and their men of high positions exercise power over them.
But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary,
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life-a ransom for many."
- Mark 10:42-45 (Holman Christian Standard)
As we begin the new year, I encourage you to take a few minutes to reflect on the incredible platform we have as coaches. Part of that platform is the opportunity to lead others. What exactly is a leader supposed to look like? Webster's Dictionary defines a leader as "someone who shows the way by going in advance." As coaches, too often we take the easy route of "dominating" and "exercising power" over our athletes. Jesus says, "it must not be like that among you." As followers of Christ, we are to put serving others above our own desires. Here are a few thoughts on how we can put that into practice in 2012.
Adopt the mindset that people work with you not for you. Encourage those around you to be creative. Make sure the people you serve have the tools to do the job you expect them to do. Say "thank you" and "good job" a lot. Try your best to make sure others have input in key decisions. Make sure the expectations you have for others are spoken and realistic. Model what you consider important. Listen! Choose your words carefully. Understand WHAT you say and HOW you say matters. "Heavenly Father, during this season of giving, help me to remember that everything I have is a gift from You. You can give and You can take away.
"Lord, help me understand the blessings that come from giving rather than receiving. Thank You Father, for the greatest gift ever, Your Son Jesus Christ. Amen."
