“Whatchya doin’ out there, tap dancing?!”
“Steal it!”
“Wrong way, son, what are you thinking?!”
Middle and high school players from all over the southeast sweated it out at last week’s South Carolina Fellowship of Christian Athletes basketball camp. It was obvious some students needed work on their court skills. And they definitely got it: there were four courts filled at all times with basketball teams scrimmaging each other.
Coaches instructed, FCA staffers gave tips, students learned…but all got more than they bargained for. “Our kids get a lot from it, other than just basketball. It challenges us spiritually and personally, students and coaches.” Hillcrest High School’s varsity basketball coach, Reggie Choplin, has brought his team for six years and is always pleasantly surprised. “The teams get here and think ball is the focal point, but after hearing the speakers they look at themselves in a different light and examine how they’re really living and what their values are.”
Hours of playing ball are followed by nights of worship and preaching. It can be grueling on a team physically, but even the players say it’s worth it for the spiritual shot in the arm. “We come together as a team, but it’s not really about basketball, it’s about Jesus and a relationship with Him. We can talk about that openly here,” says Oliver Jones, a junior at Ninety Six High School. Michael Mack, a senior player at Laurens High, says, “The preacher combined sports, school and following the Lord. It’s different. It teaches you to play your life the right way.”
Coach Jeff Neely, Varsity Basketball Coach at Greer High School, has seen several players saved over the years. He said low cost is what initially attracted him to FCA summer camp, but seeing his players learning to play the right way is what keeps him coming back.
**It is not too late to give towards an FCA camp this summer. There are dozens like this one all over the state. Just contact your local FCA staffer by going to www.southcarolinafca.org.
